One day we’ll be in a Marvel movie, sitting there as something doesn’t feel right. and as the credits start to roll we’ll know what it is. It will flash up on screen and our hearts will break. “In loving memory of Stan Lee”. There was no cameo in that movie. And there never will be again.

Underneath this fragile frame
Lives a battle between pride and shame
But I’ve misplaced that sense of fight
This crown of thorns is perched atop my spine
But listen closely as I testify
Dependency has been a thief at night
Thief at night, thief at night

Just don’t give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don’t think you can go wrong.

When I was growing up, “rape” was a word that was whispered, if it was spoken at all. Around the time that Speak was published, America started to talk about rape and began to move away (slowly) from the destructive notion of victim-blaming. The Internet can be a real cesspool of sexual abuse and hatred, but it has also allowed victims of sexual assault to find help and healing. Their ability to speak up is leading to a revolutionary shift in attitudes about sexual assault. We still have a long way to go, but I am very optimistic.

It’s hard to wrap my head around all of this. I’m intensely grateful that the story poured through me and that – thanks to the hard work of lots of people and the stars lining up at the right time – [Speak] continues to be a source of strength and hope.

Laurie Halse Anderson talks about the 15th anniversary of Speak, about censorship, gender, and the shifting world of YA fiction in my interview at Book Riot.  (via catagator)

If SPEAK touched up, please help a sexual assault victim speak up and heal. Donate to RAINN, the best anti-sexual violence charity in America. (We have great SPEAK swag as thank-you gifts!)

I just donated!! You should too if you can! -YW

I wonder
whose arms would I run and fall into
if I were drunk
in a room with everyone
I have ever loved.
